Filipino Passport Holder Schengen Visa Application via Czech Republic in Dubai

I hate applying for a Visa - not because I am lazy processing requirements but I am scared I might be denied. Paranoid? Nah, I think its just normal specially if you are an expat from a third world country, you know what I mean. (I've been held for questioning in an immigration office twice on 2 different occasions so I think I have a valid reason to be paranoid.) 

I took the privilege of my country being an ASEAN Member then availed the VOA to the countries I am qualified but pity my passport only has a handful of countries to visit. 

So there, to cut the story short, I booked a multi city flight arriving Budapest, Hungary and departing Prague, Czech Republic via Sky Scanner. Yes, I know its risky but I booked my flights  first since its cheaper to book  ahead. 

Tip: You can apply for a Schengen Visa thru your country of entry or from the country where you will stay the most. 

Embassies in the United Arab Emirates are located in Abu Dhabi though some has their respective consulates in Dubai however, Schengen Countries direct all short term visa applicants to a service provider which is  VFS Global http://www.vfsglobal.com/

The good thing about service provider is that you don't need to travel all the way to Abu Dhabi for the application and no need to Schedule for an Appointment, just simply walk in to VFS Global located at Wafi Mall in Oud Metha, Dubai from 09:00 till 15:00 working days however, you need to pay extra AED 109.00 for the service fee on top of the AED 261.00 Visa Fee. 

Tip: Payments must be in CASH 

The website has everything if you have patient enough to browse and follow the links but here are the important ones -  Visa Fees, Documents Required and Application Form  but for quick answer, give their hotline a ring. 

Before dropping your application, make sure that you fully accomplished all the necessary documents. 

How did my process my requirements?

Between Hungary and Czech Republic, Czech has the feasible requirements. I stated the countries I am covering  and the dates of my travels on my NOC Letter. The cheapest travel insurance I found over the web that fits the criteria was with AXA Insurance. My bank details, I personally went to the bank and requested for the statements, you can also request for it over the phone but it will take 3 days to be delivered, Bank Statement cost AED 25.00. It is not true that you need to have AED 5K on your account for the application, as long as you have a salary coming in every month, you will be fine. I booked  my Free Cancellation and No Payment Required Hostel Reservations thru Booking.com. and for the train and bus tickets, I searched thru GoEuro.com. Train Tickets are expensive so most of the transportation I booked was with buses. I thoroughly checked and compared the prices and its really better to book ahead and that's what I did. Since I am aiming for a Multiple Entry, I was advised to attached a Letter of Application with my detailed travel plan including my Tour Reservations. 

How was my application experience?

So, I have all my requirements ready. I went to drop it as early as possible since VFS caters to all  Short Term Schengen Visa Countries. Expect that security will be tight. Fall in line at the reception, they will ask for the country you are going to apply for the visa and the purpose then they will give you a number that also indicates the Zone you need to proceed. When my number was called, I informed the lady that scanned my requirements that I am applying for a Multiple Visa and show her my Letter of Application but she said that its not a guarantee. Well. I paid a total of AED 418.00 including the Courier Fee and the SMS Fee. I was told that it will take 2 weeks for the Visa to be released. After that, I proceed to the Biometric Data Collection. It was just a quick and hassle free application. I then received an SMS that my application has been received and the next day a message saying that its been under process at the Abu Dhabi Embassy. However, those are the only messages I received from the SMS Service. I tried checking my application thru the website's track my application but no updates. Excalty after 10 days from the day it was processed in Abu Dhabi, a parcel came to the office with my passport - I was so excited and tense at the same time - I opened my passport and saw a Schengen Visa pasted on its page however I was only given a single entry and strictly with the days of my travel. That was disappointing, I even attached my next trip's ticket after this one but still, they didn't allow it, however, its still a Schengen Visa and I got my first one. It an accomplishment.

Hatta Day Trip

If you’re up for an awesome road trip adventure for a day in the UAE, then Hatta is one of the best place to visit. Hatta is an inland enclave which is 115 KM from Dubai relatively high in the Hajar Mountains bordering Oman .

Important: The closest exit from Dubai is the Al Madam-Hatta Diversion E44 however the Exit is only exclusive to UAE Locals and Omanis.

Expat Route to Hatta: Turn left to the Al Madam roundabout and get onto the E55 heading to Al Malaiha and turn to Sharjah - Kalba Road then right turn to Hatta onto E44.  

It was the Islamic New Year when we head to Hatta leaving Dubai at 0730 and took the E44 Route relying our lives to Google Maps ( MapHere ) but when we reached the border, we were instructed to turn back and take the Sharjah/Kalba Road instead which took us an additional hour to get to Hatta but it was all worth it. UAE Roads are one of the finest I've ever seen so far. My eyes were filled with the picturesque landscapes of the Rocky Mountains, fine cunning desert and camels along the way.

After 2 and a half hours of driving with few stops for photo ops, we reached our first destination - the Hatta Dam. Yes, it is man-made but it’s a master piece. The artificial lake is perfectly tailored filled with stunning turquoise water surrounded by rocky bare mountains. Be ready for a steep drive to reach the view point. There are limited parking areas and there's no toilets available. Dubai Police are visible within the area, just follow the rules and regulations and you will be fine.

Apart from sight seeing and picnic,  Kayak and Pedal Boat Rentals are also available but if you are not up for it or simply scared you'll get roasted, you can still stay and sit for free while admiring the amazing view. (Another Dam is under construction which is  5 minutes away). Visit www.hattakayak.com for more info.

Third Stop was the Hatta Hill Park - its 5 minutes drive from Hatta Heritage Village and is a popular spot for picnics and barbeques. Entrance is Fee. If you don't have food, just like us, there's a grocery store beside the mosque after the roundabout going to the Hill Park, you can stop to shop then go. Parking Area shouldn't be a problem - there's a lot of spaces available. Though it was quite  tough going up the hill but the green scenery from the cottages with the cool breeze was very rewarding. The cottages has a barbeque area and trash bins. The area was very relaxing but be careful with the bees and other instincts flying and crawling around that may sting anytime. 

We then decided to head to Hatta Pool, we're not actually prepared for it and as per my research it was already in the territory of Oman, but then we still tried to go since its just 15 minutes drive from Hill Park. When we reached the border, we were advised that we can't cross ( perhaps if we have a visa) so the officer suggested some places that we can go and gave instructions using our maps. We were thinking of Al Ain, Abu Dhabi but since we can't cross the E44 border, we then decided to drive to Kalba, Fujairah via Rugaylat Road/ E99. It was a 51.5 km awesome drive with breathtaking views on an unbelievable road. With the Kalba Flag Pole as our destination, which is beside a corniche, we immediately took a rest - literally just lay on the grass and sleep. The Kalba Corniche is so clean and has well maintained rest rooms. Too bad we were not ready for some picnic but the nap on the grass was enough. We wander over Kalba's Beaches before hitting the road again back to Dubai and stopped for some quick affordable bites on a resto along the road.

1 Day Joined In Group Tour in Armenia

I wish I had the luxury of time exploring these 2 great and beautiful countries, Armenia and Georgia but I only had 5 days to spent and I want to squeeze everything I want to do and places I want to see in just 1 full day without exceeding my budget, thus I started researching and comparing the best travel agencies that has join in group tour that caters both and I was lucky to find one – Hyur Service.

Note: The Regular Day Tours in Armenia follows a schedule which depends on the days of the week so make sure to align your travels plans accordingly if you want to explore Armenia on a budget though you can always do a private tailored tour anytime.

After browsing the tour packages and itineraries, I checked on the places to see how it looks like and to know more of its history for comparison. I was lucky enough that the tour where the most places I was interested in falls on a Wednesday which was my 2^nd day in Armenia before crossing Georgia so I immediately sent an email to the agency thru their website but I didn't get a response. After a week, I sent an email via contact@hyurservice.com and got a response immediately informing that the web email was not working and to confirm my reservation, they asked for a soft copy of my passport and contact number to be forwarded to their accounting department. 

Before my flight, I sent an email informing about my flight schedule and confirming that I will be paying the tour a day before the tour itself in their office as per the  agency policy. Upon arrival, the agency called me which I missed so I immediately sent an email giving them my ETA in their office for the payment. After doing some DIY City Tour exploring Republic Square, I head straight to the office and pay the tour. I asked if they do pick up which they politely advised that they don't - I informed that that I got lost on my way to their office and that I might be late tomorrow if that's the case, so the lady called her manager and asked if I can be picked up which the manager agreed. #feelingblessed

Children's Park along Movses Khorenatsi Street

On the tour itself, I woke up very early since I was anticipating a long toilet queue, the struggle of every backpacker on a hostel. I went out for some walk on the nearest park, the Children's Park and on the long Movses Khorenatsi Street savoring the cold chilly weather of Armenia while the entire city was still fast asleep. Armenia is quite laid back with business hours from 10:00 am till 6:00 pm. the guy from Hyur Services knocked 15 minutes before 9:00 am to pick us up. The Tourist Bus was a modern 35 seater, equipped with AC/Heater, TV and Toilet – very comfortable. We left the city at 9:30 am heading on the tour's first stop which located far south about 122 km of Yerevan - The Noravank Monastery.  Though it was starting to rain, the weather was just manageable with 15 degrees Celsius. The Tour Guide was on point giving information and history of the places we are passing thru. I was lost with the beauty of the scenery and it took me some time to notice d that snow was falling - I was witnessing my first snow! The guide informed us that snow started to fall on the country side weeks earlier than the usual. 

The Noravank Monastery is a 13th century monastery situated deep within the Noravank Canyon. The breath taking view left me in awe as we enter the shallow uphill road to the entrace. The Noravank Complex includes the 1339 St. Astvatsatsin (“Burtelashen”) sepulchre-church, St. Stepanos Nakhavka and Gavit, St. Grigor Church and Stepanos Orbelian Sepulchre - the remains of medieval chapels and residential quarters and a modern office and hall.

Next destination was the Tatev Monastery which is 150 KM from Noravank Monastery. It is an 18th century monastery located in the Syunik Province. The entire province was covered with snow by the time we reached the area. We went straight to a restaurant which served authentic Armenian Dish and we were given 40 mins to relax and enjoy the place before heading to the monastery. 

The tour guide gave us our ticket to the Ropeway or Wings of Tatev, which is an aerial tram, yes, the easiest and best way to reach the monastery. It was the longest reversible cableway in the world (5752 m), recorded in the Guinness Book of Records. It was 12 minute ride with the most stunning and picturesque view. 

And to the last destination, Karahunj (Zorats Karer) or the the Armenian Stonehenge which is 50 Km away from Tatev Monastery is. It was almost past 6 pm when we reached  Karahunj and the temperature dropped to negative.  A miniture of Karahunj was built near the main road for it takes 10 minutes’ walk to reach the actual site. Our guide took us to the miniature stones as she share the history and other related stories about the stones and the site. Since we want to see the actual stone, we were given 30 minutes to explore. Running along the slippery ground road covered with snow, I actually didn’t recognized that it was the actually area since I was expecting something big as the London Stonehenge. It seems like a pagan ritual site to me, to be honest or maybe because it was covered with snow. 

We head back to Yerevan with a 15 minute stop for toilet break and reached the City at 9pm dropping us all at the Yerevan Square. Good thing was some restaurants were still open for to dine and bond with friends I made during this tour. Indeed, it was a day well spent. As a female solo and budget traveller -  I highly recommend this tour. 

Armenian VOA for Philippine Passport Holder

One of the best perks of being an expat in Dubai is the convenience of travelling. I am a Filipina holding a UAE Residency and that allows me to have a Visa on Arrival in countries such as Armenia and Georgia. Both countries were former member of the Soviet Union in the Mountainous Caucasus Region bordering Europe and Asia and its only 3 and a half hours flight away from Dubai.

Since I was on a VOA, I was confident that it will be a swift process but I was wrong - it took me 20 minutes to get my Visa since the Visa Application Area were flocked by tourist busy signing their Application Form. So, in order to avoid that, here are my tips:

Armenian Visa

• Pre - signed Visa Application Form - Admit it, we are all get lazy filling out application forms but this one will help speed up your waiting time. Visa Application Area are full of people signing up their forms and most of them doesn't have pens - which will delay your application if you are kind enough to lend yours unless you want to give it away. • Have your money exchanged - Armenia Tourist Visa Single Entry  (up to 21 days of stay) / Non-refundable fee Cost $6.00 or 3000.00 AMD. ( To know more about the fees, visit http://www.mfa.am/en/fees/ ) However, they ONLY accept US Dollars and Armenian Dram. Though there's a currency exchange stall beside the Visa Application Area, the conversion rates are not quite competitive so better have your money exchanged in Dollars before travelling. ( I paid mine in USD since the conversion was 2870.10 Dram only ). 

• Pay for your Visa ahead - this is the best thing, you can pay for your Visa to avoid all the hassles (though there's a commission fee of $ 1.00) On the Consulate Fee page, look for the type of Visa you are getting then click the PAY link and it will reroute you to the payment page. Just Visit http://www.mfa.am/en/ for more information. Just don't forget to print and keep the receipt. 

Transport from Armenia Airport to Yerevan City Centre

Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan is relatively small and since there was a long queue at the Immigration, it took me almost an hour to exit the airport. Like any other airports, the arrival area was packed with numerous Taxi and Private Car Drivers offering transport services. To avoid all the hassles at the airport -  you can avail the Pick Up Service from the airport with your hostel which normally cost $10.00 or you can hail a taxi for 5000 Dram ($10.45) or a private car for 6600 Dram ($13.00 ) - the good thing about private car is that they allow to do sharing, perfect if you are traveling solo but since I was travelling on a budget, I opted to take the local transport service which is the mini van that cost me 200 Dram (¢ 0.42). 

How to get to the Minivan Area? 

There's no proper minivan station even a signage the leads you to the area.  From the main airport exit door, walk thru the parking area, on the far left side of the parking lot, you will see white minivans parked . Though majority of the drivers doesn’t speak English, some do understand the language, Asked for the minivan that will go to the City Centre and they will point you to the exact van. Minivan #201 connects the airport with the crossroads of Sayat-Nova and Mashtots streets in Yerevan and Minibus #108 also connects the city center.

How was my experience? 
The minivan will not leave until it gets full so its not ideal if you are in a hurry and the van was small enough to place my 55 liters backpack on the isle. The driver doesn’t understand English but I was ready for it so I opened up google maps where I already pinned my hostel’s location and asked to be dropped at the nearest tourist landmark showing a photo of the place (St. Grigor Lusavorich Church) which is at the city centre opposite of the mall. It was 30 minutes’ drive from the airport to City Centre. Yes, it took me a while but eventually I did arrive and I love the trilling experience. You can also do the same! 

The Zambales Coves

Zambales lies on the western shores of Luzon Island, Philippines along the South China Sea. This is one of those provinces that pretty much have it all – untainted forest landscape, the Sierra Madre mountain range, communities that practice living traditions and 107 miles of pure beach. Zambales is known as the bastion of the Aetas; they were the earliest Filipinos to migrate to the archipelago more than 10,000 years ago.
Pundaquit, Zambales is one of my favorite sweet escapes from the city turmoil being very economical and its proximity to Manila. Long stretches of almost white volcanic sand (The eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991 greatly altered the vast landscape) turquoise waters, serene lagoons lined by pine trees and pristine islets set against white sand beaches and rugged mountains dot the western seaboard of Luzon. I love to spend my weekend here with my family and friends – beach bumming, camping and surfing.
Barangay San Antonio is the most popular jump–off point for the popular coves, Anawangin, Talisayen, Silangen, Nagsasa and  Capones and also known for the Magic Left Reef Break with surfers.
To get there from Metro Manila
Bus:  take a three-hour bus ride from the Victory Liner stations in Cubao, Caloocan City, Pasay City or Sampaloc in Manila. Take the Iba or Sta. Cruz-bound bus and ask to be dropped off in front of the San Antonio town hall. From there you can take a tricycle to Pundaquit.
Private Car:  take the Balintawak exit to the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx). From NLEx, take the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx) exit, then follow the route to Subic Bay Freeport. From the Subic free port tollgate, turn right on Rizal Highway. Then go straight until you reach the dead end. Turn left (on the right is the tollgate to Olongapo City), then turn right on the first intersection (Canal Street) and exit through Kalaklan Gate (tollgate to Zambales). Follow the Zambales highway until you reach the San Antonio town hall.From the town hall, take a tricycle to Pundaquit where boats wait to ferry tourists to the coves.

Pundaquit Jump Off / Magic Left

Pundaquit has a lot of cheap hotels along its shore but  we always go DIY whenever we go camping. And even if San Antonio has a huge wet and dry market, we prefer to purchase everything we need in Manila to save time. The cove has no electricity and has a weak mobile network coverage plus its 30 minutes minimum away from Pundaquit so you need to prepare everything from your tent to food and other personal stuff. Expect that the coves are packed out with campers during weekends most especially on legal holidays.  It is ideal to leave Manila at 2:00 am or 03:00 am so you can reach Pundaquit by 06:00 am. Pundaquit has killer waves and boat men usually refrain from transferring passengers if it’s too strong so might as well be there as early as possible when the waves are still manageable. 

Where to hire a boat / banka?? 

No worries - in this barangay, everybody knows everybody. Just ask the tricycle driver that you need a boat for transport and he can directly drop you off to the boatman's/bangkero's house or just simply go to the shore - ask a local where to hire a boat then he will find you one - special delivery. RT Boat Transfer cost 1000 php as far as I can remember but sometimes it depends upon which cove you are going and the season (It cost too much during summer) or depends upon how great you are in haggling. 

The boats being used are actually fishing boats and yes, its very light but they have life vest so keep calm. 

Anawangin Cove is the nearest cove from the town proper and the most visited with 30 minutes boat ride while Nagsasa Cove is the farthest with an hour boat ride. 

Mount Pinatubo Day Hike

Mount Pinatubo is an active stratovolcano in the Cabusilan Mountains on the island of Luzon, near the tripoint of the Philippine Provinces of Zambales, Tarlac, and Pampanga with 1486 summit elevation. It has been dormant for 400 years until it erupted on June 15, 1991 and created the largest mushroom cloud in the world. The area was the home of the Aetas people – the descendants of the original inhabitants of the Philippines.

Mount Pinatubo is one of the best tourist spot in my country. A lot of travel agencies are offering a day hike and helicopter rides and I was able to visit this amazing place. We booked our day hike with TripPinas Travel and Tour Ventures. Prior on booking this trip, we tried to visit the place using an SUV however; we were not allowed to get in since we need to accomplished a lot of permits and so.

Want to go on a day hike? So here’s the drill. Contact the agency; wait for their reply with their bank account on it. You need to deposit half of the payment to them and then pay the final on the day of the hike and viola!!!

After depositing the partial payment (2,050.00 php per head), an itinerary was sent (read below) and we were advised to religiously follow (If you are late, the van will leave without you and your payment will be forfeited), oh my gee. We arrived at the meeting place at 0300, good thing it was a fast food chain because food was off the deal and I was literally came from a shift so I need to eat. I initially thought that it would be a small tour group but I was wrong - It was massive with a lot of Koreans (as usual).  The itinerary said that we will reach the base camp at 0600 but we left the city around 0530.. 

After an hour and a half, we reached the base camp. They gave our group a number and were advised to look for our 4x4 with the same number on it. There were a lot of 4x4’s on queue waiting for their respective tourist to approach. The 4x4 as stated was open and no seat belts and we were given a local, minor guide. The sun was blazingly hot when we started our travel and it was a 2 hour super - duper bumpy and dusty ride before reaching the jump off and started trekking.

As stated on the IT, we took the old way since the short cut or the sky way was closed that time.

After 2 hours with a few river crossings, we reached the Crater Lake. It was the most beautiful and amazing Crater Lake I have ever been to but I almost faint – really, because I was so hungry and exhausted. We were not ready with our camping equipment so we looked for a perfect spot, grassy and shady to dine.. We were given 2 hours to enjoy the Crater Lake so after our lunch, we went straight to the lake and swim. The water was freezing and sulfuric plus algae were present but since sulfur is good for the skin – we don’t mind. 

The site that time had 2 restrooms but there was no water source so I didn’t bother to change my clothes and stared the trek back. It was past 1500 when we reached the base camp and quickly hopped in to our 4x4 then after that I don't know what happened because I fell asleep, yeah,  an open 4x4 with no seat belt and seated in the front - i fell asleep.. Our driver woke me up when we reached the base camp and told me how worried he was for I was knocked-out dead sleeping and he was afraid I'll fall off the jeep ( I had some lumps on my head though)  We then head straight to the public shower room ( i think it was a 10 php for the shower, yes, its not free). It was 1700 when we stared to head back to Manila. I was so exhausted I just literally dropped my bag as soon as I reached home and planked in our sofa but the experience was all worth it and I'll definitely will go back, I'm thinking of an overnight camping next time..

MEET-UP POINT

·  Meet-up point is at 2:30am inside McDonalds Panay,in Quezon City on EDSA corner Quezon Avenue near the MRT Quezon Avenue Station.

·  You will meet the tour coordinator, Mr. Tee (09272429479) inside McDonalds and all the participants will sign the waiver form and pay their remaining balance there. 

   

·  There is a cutoff at the base camp, it's very important to be on time at the meet-up point. If you are late, the van will leave without you and your payment will be forfeited.

·  The meet up point is the last place where you can have your breakfast, buy your packed lunch and water as there is no shop/restaurant at Mt. Pinatubo. We will go straight to the base camp.

·  This is also the last place where you can change (if you want to wear your swim suit)

4x4 VEHICLE

The dispatch of the 4x4 vehicles is based on a queue which means that we can't choose the 4x4 vehicle you will ride. Some are open and some are close, there are no seatbelts.

Each 4x4 vehicle can seat 5 people, so it means you will have one 4x4 vehicle for your group.

TREK

You will use the "old way" to trek Mt. Pinatubo meaning you will walk 2 to 2:30 hours, one way and 4 to 5 hours round trip. There is also a shortcut (called the skyway) that is currently closed.

BOAT RIDE

Rate for the boat ride on the crater lake is Php350/person. You can pay directly the boatmen at the crater lake. The whole boat trip takes around 1 hour and allows you to see the whole crater lake and explore other parts of the lakeshore.

CHANGE OF YOUR GROUP'S HEADCOUNT

Registration at the tourism office is mandatory, which means you can't change the lineup of your group without advising us.

·  If you want to add more participants kindly send us an email before-hand to check if we still have some slots available.

·  If some of you can't join, keep in mind that, no show = forfeiture of your down payment (you can, however, transfer the slot(s) to a new participant provided that it is for the same travel date). Furthermore, if you don't advise us before-hand, the remaining balance of the no-shows will be paid by the other participants of your group.
